OFCOM changes to the amateur radio licence

less than 1 minute read

This is a pretty big deal in the UK amateur radio world, while not one of our events specifically:

-

General notice of decision to vary amateur radio licences

It is generally more permissive that the previous licence conditions. In particular changes that are favourable are

Section 6 Persons who may operate the radio equipment

The Radio Equipment may be used by the Licensee or by any person who has the permission of the licensee to do so and who is under the direct supervision of the Licensee

which means unlicensed people can make contacts as long as operation is supervised by a Licence holder - previously the contact had to be set up by a licensed person. This is much better for a more realistic experience for the visitor.

Other changes make new things possible, for the first time Aeronautical Mobile is possible in some bands - mainly limited to 500mW and not in all amateur bands. There is much more - the RSGB has an overview of the changes.
